My other two gripes are one, that the adults all seem sort of callous/incompetent. It doesn’t feel too out of place in 90s fiction but even in a 2020 publication that’s looking back it seems a little stiff.

I also don’t really like the bitchy popular girls trope, in part because it feels so dated. Alex learns that the whole way she was living her life was incorrect and she needs to be a better person. Hailey learns to be confident and do basic skincare. The book does do a few things to rectify this initial portrayal but ultimately it comes out feeling like Hailey is more “right” in the way she lives her life.

However, and this is perhaps because it is told from Hailey’s POV, I feel that Alex gets the short end of the stick.Īlex loves make-up and fashion and is written as a stereotypical mean girl. I like the way that the relationship between the sisters develops as they both learn that neither sister has it as easy as expected. Alex and Hailey are both clear cut characters in opposition. The plot is fairly simple and fast paced, which works for middle grade fiction. The book does have some significant differences though which allows it to stand on its own. Some readers may recognize the title and premise as it was released as a Disney Channel movie way back when. I’ve always been a sucker for old coming of age stories, so of course I jumped on the chance to read Wish Upon a Star, a story about two sisters in the 90s who end up swapping bodies when the younger wishes she was her older, more popular sister. The book does have some significant differences though which allows it to stand on For more reviews and bookish content: The main performances aren't bad (though nearly all supporting roles are forgettable), the messages are ultimately positive, but parents may feel a little bit uncomfortable with the frequent literal zoning in on Heigl at the expense of more substance. For more reviews and bookish content: I’ve always been a sucker for old coming of age stories, so of course I jumped on the chance to read Wish Upon a Star, a story about two sisters in the 90s who end up swapping bodies when the younger wishes she was her older, more popular sister.

Unfortunately, it falls a bit into stereotypes about being smart versus being popular or fashionable, and because the camera spends so much time literally panning Heigl's body in mini-skirts, and because her looks, and the affections of her boyfriend and dressing in a risque way becomes such a routine part of the plot (which involves a lot of kissing, some welcomed catcalls, and a striptease-style dance), it moves the material into a more mature zone. Here, Heigl and Harrison have good chemistry, and having them both long for the same boyfriend and ultimately forced to appreciate each other's strengths and weaknesses makes for some nice insights into sibling rivalry and grass-is-greener thinking about other's lives. What would happen if you could trade places with someone with a better life than you, even for a few days? Movies like Big, 13 Going on 30, and Freaky Friday all trafficked in the same what-if scenario to better results, but Wish Upon a Star is not entirely without its charms. WISH UPON A STAR works an appealing but somewhat overdone premise.
